YB. Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry will lead a Trade and Investment Mission to Bangkok, Thailand from 22-23 February 2012 and to Myanmar from 23-24 February 2012.

He will also be representing Malaysia at the 18th ASEAN Economic Ministers' Retreat which will be held from 25-26 February 2012 in Nay Pyi Daw, Myanmar.

The Trade and Investment Mission to Thailand and Myanmar aims to strengthen Malaysia's trade, investment and economic cooperation with these two countries. Apart from that, the mission will also attempt to identify business collaboration opportunities in sectors such as the construction industry, infrastructure development, tourism, agriculture, healthcare, oil and gas.

The Minister will be accompanied by 40 senior government officials and private sector representatives.

At the 18 th AEM Retreat, the ASEAN Economic Ministers are expected to review progress made in the implementation of measures to realise the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015. The average implementation rate of the AEC Blueprint measures for the first (2008-2009) and second (2010-2011) phases is 75.6 per cent.

The Ministers will also deliberate on new initiatives and ways to strengthen ASEAN economic integration beyond 2015 and follow-up on decisions taken at the last ASEAN Summit held in Bali in November last year to foster inclusive growth. This is in line with the ASEAN Framework for Equitable Economic Development where all citizens of ASEAN should benefit from the economic integration.

The AEM is also expected to discuss ASEAN's relations with its Dialogue Partners, including issues related to the implementation of ASEAN FTAs with China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand.

  • For January to October 2011 , 3 projects were approved with 137 potential employment opportunities.
  • In 2010 , 5 projects were approved with 394 potential employment opportunities.
  • For the period 1980-2011 , 133 projects involving Thailand equity participation were approved with a total investment value of US$482.56 million . These projects have created 15,310 jobs.
  • Out of the 133 approved projects, only 78 have been implemented .

 MYANMAR INVESTMENT IN MALAYSIA

  • For 2011, there is no investment from Myanmar into Malaysia
  • In 2010 , 1 project was approved with 10 potential employment opportunities. The investment valued US$911,688.
  • For the period 1980-2011 , 5 projects involving Myanmar equity participation were approved with a total investment value of US$9.12 million . These projects have created 122 jobs.
  • All 5 approved projects have been implemented .
