SHAH ALAM, March 6 (Bernama) -- The
International Trade and Industry Ministry will engage local industry players
and the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI) to help
manufacturers expand the market for their products at international stage.
Deputy Minister Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said the engagement was crucial as many
of the domestic industries were facing the problem of not having the facilities
to conduct tests on products they produced. "Electrical products, for instance,
have to be tested to ensure they conformed to international standards. It's
because we don't have the facilities in our country, manufacturers have to send
their products overseas for testing and this incurs high costs. "MITI
needs to discuss this matter with the relevant industry players, including
MOSTI. I see this as an important factor for us to help local companies prepare
themselves for the increasingly liberal domestic market and help them export
their products and services," he told reporters after visiting a switch
gear supplier, Indkom Engineering Sdn Bhd, here. The deputy minister said he
was elated to see the local company's initiative to complement the government's
call to Malaysia-based industries to be more innovative and competitive.
