The Halal Industry Development Corporation (HDC), the Small & Medium Industries Development Corporation (SMIDEC) and Nestlé have established a three-party strategic collaboration to jointly promote the development of SMEs in the halal food and beverages (F&B) industry in Malaysia.
The three corporations announced on 10 August 2009 their common commitment to pool their energy and core competencies to ensure that SMEs in the halal F&B sub-sector are kept abreast of opportunities and developments in Malaysia and globally.
Other than providing advisory services, financial assistance, infrastructural facilities, and market access to SMEs in the halal sector, SMIDEC will identify and recommend potential SMEs in the halal ingredient industry to both HDC and Nestlé, based on SMIDEC’s evaluation system. Selected SMEs will be eligible to receive technical and financial assistance which will help ensure that the SMEs meet the specified standards set by Nestlé as their supplier. HDC, on the other hand, will assist SMEs in capacity development, covering training and consultancy in halal certification and halal integrity as well as international promotion of SMEs abroad.
Meanwhile, Nestlé a leading multinational company (MNC) in the F&B industry will share its expertise and experience in market segmentation, product development and niche marketing. Nestlé’s global outreach will be a tremendous advantage in identifying potential segments of raw and processed ingredients that can be supplied by Malaysian SMEs. Datuk Jamil Bidin, the Chief Executive Officer of HDC said that the strategic collaboration could help reduce the nation’s dependency on imported ingredients where appropriate, without compromising on the standards set by Nestlé.
Nestlé has also agreed to provide facilitators who are experienced in the F&B manufacturing industry for a mentoring programme in collaboration with SMIDEC. The facilitators will provide advice on worldclass F&B manufacturing practices and standard operating procedures to help the selected SMEs take their business to the next level; by becoming suppliers of raw and finished materials to F&B manufacturers in the market.
Nestlé Malaysia will also provide technical advice, assessment and plant audits on halal implementation procedures to other Nestlé companies worldwide, including its global suppliers as well as on individual requests from other interested parties. Nestlé Malaysia has the distinction of being the Halal Centre of Excellence for Nestlé worldwide, and has successfully put in place established protocols on the company’s halal assurance system since 1997.
The strategic collaboration between HDC, SMIDEC and Nestlé will enhance Malaysia’s position as a leader in the global halal industry and is in line with the country’s aspiration of becoming a global halal hub. SMEs are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities from this initiative.
