The Government of Malaysia has received a safeguard petition fromMegasteel Sdn. Bhd. representing the domestic industry producing hot rolled coils (HRC). HRC is used as base material in various industries such as automotive, construction, electric and electronics, fabrication, engineering and manufacturing. The petitioner alleges that importation of HRC into Malaysia have increased from 2007 to 2010 and have caused serious injury to the domestic industry in Malaysia.
Based on the petition, the Government has established that there are sufficient evidence of increase in imports of HRC into Malaysia, serious injury and causal link. As such, the Government has decided to initiate a preliminary safeguard investigation on imports of HRC commencing on 1 May 2011.

1. It has come to our attention that there has been concern expressed in news reports over the last few days on the issue surrounding the Unemployment Insurance Scheme especially from the Small and Medium Enterprises.
2. We wish to inform that the Feasibility Study for an Unemployment Insurance Scheme is still at its fact finding and consensus building stage. A Tripartite Project Committee chaired by the Chief Executive Officer of SOCSO and comprising representatives of the Ministry of Human Resources, Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) and the Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) has been formed to monitor and guide the study.

The imposition of import licence on these products was gazetted under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) (Amendment) (No.2) Order 2012 on 12 June 2012.

On 18 June 2012, the current nine (9) Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiating participants unanimously accepted Mexico into the TPP negotiations. This follows several months of bilateral consultations between Mexico and the 9 participants.
Mexico will be able to formally participate in the negotiations after all the current participants have undertaken their domestic procedures.
Considering the advanced state of negotiations, Mexico will have to abide with procedures established to ensure that there is no undue delay to the negotiations.
The procedures allow sufficient opportunity for Mexico to be fully engaged in the negotiations to conclude a comprehensive and balanced package.
