- The Ministry of International Trade (MITI) and Industry wishes to clarify the statement made by S.M. Mohamed Idris, President of the Consumers Association of Penang in the Star dated 22 August 2014, pertaining to the issue of certification under the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA).
- As background, the US certification requirement has been in existence since the 1980s. It is being proposed as part of the new US Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities Act of 2014, introduced in January 2014.
- MITI wishes to emphasise that Malaysia has not agreed to the certification process proposed by the United States in the negotiations. This proposal is still being deliberated as there appears to be strong opposition to its inclusion.
- As has been reiterated, national interest will prevail in our negotiations.
