7 December, KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysia-Iran Joint Economic Commission (JEC) Senior Officials Meeting (SOM), co-chaired by Mdm. Mastura Ahmad Mustafa, Deputy Secretary General (International Trade) of MITI and Mr. Behzad Ahmadi, Advisor of International Strategic Studies, Ministry of Information and Communications Technology, Islamic Republic of Iran, was held in Kuala Lumpur on 7 December 2023.
Both sides had constructive discussions on various areas of cooperation, including trade and investment, tourism and culture, social development, and information and communications technology. Towards strengthening our bilateral cooperation, both sides took the opportunity to discuss several proposed memorandums of understanding to advance our shared interests in line with both countries’ national development agenda.
Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Iran reached RM3.68 billion (USD0.84 billion) in 2022. Iran was Malaysia’s 8th largest trading partner among West Asia countries, while Malaysia was Iran’s 3rd largest trading partner among ASEAN countries.
