- Surveillance of national trade policies is a core activity of the WTO, centred on the Trade Policy Review Mechanism (TPRM). Through this mechanism, the trade policies of all WTO members are periodically reviewed, with the frequency depending on each member's share of global trade.
- The General Council also meets as the Trade Policy Review Body to undertake trade policy reviews of members under the TPRM and to consider the Director-General's regular reports on trade policy development.
- Malaysia considers the Trade Policy Review (TPR) a valuable exercise and an effective platform for identifying areas for continuous improvement, benefiting trade, investment, and environmental sustainability. To-date, Malaysia has completed eight rounds of reviews:
8th TPR – 8 and 10 February 2023
7th TPR – 14 and 16 February 2018
6th TPR – 3 and 5 March 2014
5th TPR – 25 and 27 January 2010
4th TPR – 16 and 18 January 2006
3rd TPR – 3 and 5 December 2001
2nd TPR – 4 and 5 December 1997
1st TPR – 19 and 20 July 1993
- Malaysia has also been actively participating in other members’ trade policy reviews, in line with the objectives of TRPM to promote accountability, predictability and transparency, which are the core values of the multilateral trading system.
