The Government initiated an investigation on the imports of hot rolled coils (HRC) into Malaysia pursuant to the Safeguards Act, 2006 on 10 September 2015 upon receiving a petition for an investigation submitted by Megasteel Sdn. Bhd (The Petitioner). The Petitioner claimed that the imports of HRC into Malaysia have increased from 2012 to 2014 and have caused serious injury to the domestic industry in Malaysia.
Pursuant to section 20 of the Safeguards Act 2006, the Government has completed the investigation and has found that the increase in imports during the period of injury determination does not amount to a sharp and significant increase. The Government also finds that the serious injury could not be linked to imports.
Based on these findings, the Government decided to terminate this investigation on the imports of HRC into Malaysia on 8 January 2016. In light of the current challenges faced by the iron and steel sector, the government will continuously engage the domestic iron and steel industry.
