Malaysia's efforts at protecting Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) received a major boost from the United States in an annual report issued by the US Trade Representative's office.
The “Special 301 Report", which reviewed the IPR practices of 73 trading partners of the US, highlighted Malaysia as one of the countries that have best practices in the area of IPR protection and enforcement. Specifically, Malaysia was commended for the progress made in deterring and preventing infringing distribution networks through its inter-agency Special Anti-Piracy Task Force, considered in the report as an example of excellent cooperation and coordination among government agencies.
The USTR also acknowledged that the Special Internet Forensics Unit in Malaysia’s Min¬istry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives, and Consumerism serves as an important catalyst in the fight against counterfeiting and piracy in Malaysia.
International Trade and Industry Minister Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed welcomed the report. "This latest endorsement of our efforts at combatting intellectual piracy will further burnish Malaysia's credentials as a preferred investment destination," Dato' Sri Mustapa said.
