Malaysia-Chile Free Trade Agreeement (MCFTA)

Background

Malaysia-Chile Free Trade Agreement (MCFTA) was signed by Y.B. Datuk Richard Riot Anak Jaem, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia and Hon. Alfredo Moreno Charme, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chile on 13 November 2010 in Yokohama, Japan. MCFTA came into force on 25 February 2012.

The negotiations were concluded in May 2010 and cover Trade in Goods and Cooperation. Negotiations on services and investments will commence within two years after the implementation of the Trade in Goods Agreement. This is Malaysia's fifth bilateral and the first FTA with a Latin American country.

Scope

  • Areas covered under the Malaysia-Chile FTA are:

    • trade in goods
      • tariffs;
      • rules of origin (RoO);
      • sanitary and phyto-sanitary measures (SPS);
      • customs procedures; and
      • technical barriers to trade (TBT).
    • legal issues;
    • trade remedies; and
    • co-operation.

    •  The Agreement outlines commitments from both countries on liberalisation of trade in goods. Malaysia and Chile will progressively reduce or eliminate tariffs on their respective industrial and agricultural products.

  • An FTA between Malaysia and Chile, in the long term, offers opportunities to strengthen trade and investment linkages by:

    1. enhancing Malaysia 's market share in Chile;
    2. facilitating two-way investment flows in areas of common interest; and
