MITI, as the secretariat for Committee on Mandatory Industrial Standards (CMIS) has organised an awareness seminar on standards, with the theme ‘Standards towards Increasing Market Competitiveness' on 13 December 2011. The objectives of the seminar were to enhance the awareness of industry on standardisation activities including mandatory standards compliance, accreditation and social responsibility. The seminar was attended by 40 participants from local SMEs, government agencies and industry Associations including electric & electronics, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, transportation, machinery, services, wood, textiles, food and rubber sectors.
The seminar was officiated by Madam Harjit Kaur, Senior Director of Investment Policy and Trade Facilitation Division, MITI. She focused on the importance of adopting standards among the businesses, which can further enhance its competitiveness in the local and global market. Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), STANDARDS MALAYSIA , and SIRIM Berhad presented papers on standardisation initiatives namely policy on standards and way forward, accreditation activities in Malaysia and the benefits of adopting ISO 26000 – Guidance on Social Responsibility .
MITI highlighted on the importance and benefits of adopting standards and proposed recommendations including:

Industries are encouraged to use existing institutional framework as a platform to raise issues on development of standards, trade and industry matters, as well as any incentives needed;

Communication channel between the industry, government agencies as well as regulatory body must also be utilised as to ensure local industries stay alert to the international trend of doing business as well as development of standards;

Industries need to be more active in the standards setting activities, for instance trade related programmes. It is to ensure that our local industries stay competitive in the global market; and

For businesses, the widespread adoption of International Standards means that suppliers can develop and offer products and services meeting specifications that have wide international acceptance in their sectors. Therefore, businesses using International Standards can compete on many more markets around the world.
TNB Resesarch Sdn. Bhd. and Hume Cemboard Industries Sdn. Bhd., who were the recipients of Malaysian Standards (MS) User Award 2011, were invited to share its success story of adopting and complying standards in businesses. For both companies, complying with standards means gaining confidence from customers and stakeholders from the various certification program as well as growth in revenue stream due to increase services request and new customers. It also reduces cost of quality when defects are detected at earlier stage.
As the secretariat for Committee on Mandatory Industrial Standards (CMIS), MITI coordinate among the relevant government agencies and industry representatives to address issues pertaining to the implementation of mandatory standards .
