The Ministry of International Trade and Industry through the National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (NAICO) made its biggest appearance ever in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2017 (LIMA ‘17). This is part of MITI’s efforts in promoting the development of Malaysian aerospace and Shipbuilding & Ship Repair (SBSR) industries.
Day 1: 21 March 2017 (Tuesday)

LIMA’17 was officially opened by YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) Tarmac. The Opening Ceremony was also attended by MITI Minister YB Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed and MITI Deputy Minister (Industry) YB Datuk Ahmad Maslan. During the Opening Ceremony, the Prime Minister highlighted MITI’s role in the development of aerospace industry through National Aerospace Industry Coordinating Office (NAICO). The 2016 achievement of the Malaysian aerospace industry was also announced by the Prime Minister.
MITI had a soft launch of the Malaysian Aerospace Industry Report (AIR) 2016/2017 at MITI Pavilion located at Hall B, MIEC. The AIR highlighted the performance of the aerospace industry throughout 2016 based on the strategies and targets set in the Malaysia Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030. To highlight the implementation of Blueprint initiatives, a MoU/MoA exchange ceremony was conducted. YB Minister MITI witnessed the exchange of eight (8) MoU’s/MoA’s involving industry players, Government agencies and research institutions as listed below.

• MoU between GIFAS (French Aerospace Industries Association) and Malaysia Aerospace Industry Association (MAIA) on International Aerospace Collaboration;
• MoU between UMW Corporation and Safran Aircraft Engines on Potential Collaboration in Aero-engine Manufacturing;
• MoU between UMW Land & MIDA on collaboration in promoting UMW Development Park;
• MoU between Aerospace Malaysia Innovation Centre (AMIC), Composites Technology Research Malaysia (CTRM), Advanced Seating Solutions and University of Malaya (UM) on Composite Aircraft Seats;
• MoU between CTRM, MARA and AMIC on Cooperation Agreement for ASEAN Composite Technology;
• MoU between CTRM and Hicom University College on General Cooperation in Human Capital Development & Product research.
• MoA between CTRM, Nuclear Malaysia, Universiti Teknikal  Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on Innovation project: Recycle of Carbon Fibre; and
• MoA between CTRM and Human Resource Department, Ministry of Human Resource, on  Cooperation on Manpower Skill Commitment  (Kerjasama Dalam Program Peneraju Skil Iltizam) in Advanced Composite Manufacturing Technician.

YB Minister MITI had a walkabout at the MIEC covering SME Pavilion, MATRADE Business Meeting Area, MITI Pavilion, BHIC, CTRM, BAE Systems, Kongsberg, Sapura, MAHB and Telekom Malaysia. Later YB Minister MITI officiated the launching of the Global Turbine Asia (GTA) manufacturing facility at Safran Pavilion. The new manufacturing facility located in Subang Airport will be the expansion of GTA’s helicopter-engines MRO business.
YB Minister MITI later attended the LIMA’17 Maritime Gracing Ceremony by YAB Prime Minister which marked the launch of the Maritime segment. YB Minister and YBhg. Datuk Seri J. Jayasiri, MITI’s Secretary General had a walkabout to the Maritime Exhibition Hall and visited several exhibitors including Muhibbah Engineering (showcased the CJ66 Fast Interceptor Craft), AS Aero Services (showcased the Wing In Ground Craft - Airfish8), Shin Yang Shipping and Omahas Corporation.
Towards the end of the day, YB Minister chaired two meetings with Safran Aircraft Engine and T7 Aerospace with their partner Kilgour of United Kingdom. The aims of the meetings were to discuss potential projects that are currently being developed by the companies. Later, YB Minister and Secretary General of MITI attended the LIMA’17 Official Reception hosted by MINDEF at Century Langkasuka.

Day 2: 22 March 2017 (Wednesday)

The second day started off with the ‘Open Forum on Aerospace Industry’ organised by MDA at MITI Pavilion where the Secretary General of MITI delivered a welcoming remark. The forum was a gathering of industry experts and leaders who shared their vision, recent developments and the way forward for the aerospace industry. The speakers were from SPIRIT AeroSystems Malaysia, CTRM, Technical Centre for Mechanical Industries (CETIM) and MAIA. The Forum was part of Government’s continuous efforts in collaborating with industry players to promote the aerospace industry and to further enhance the overall aerospace eco-system in Malaysia.
The Secretary General of MITI also had a discussion with Rolls Royce on research & technology initiatives and collaboration with AMIC. The objective of the meeting was to discuss Rolls-Royce’s partnership with AMIC in developing technological competency in Malaysia. The meeting also marked handover of the Scalable Fixture project by AMIC to Rolls-Royce.
Later, the Open Forum on SBSR was organised by MIGHT at MITI Pavilion. The main objective of this Forum was to create awareness on the opportunities for industry development, trade and investment in the SBSR industry.  It also provided a useful platform for knowledge sharing and insights aimed at further elevating the industry. Invited speakers were representatives from the SBSR industry as wall Subject Matter Expert.

Day 3: 23 March 2017 (Thursday)

On the third day of LIMA’17, NAICO co-organised a series of talks in collaborations with the Strategic Trade Secretariat of MITI, the Technology Depository Agency (TDA) and AMIC. The sessions started off with a talk on “The Overview and Current Issues on the Strategic Trade Act (STA) 2010”. The aim of the talk was to create awareness on the STA 2010 legislation that controls the export, transshipment, transit and brokering of strategic items and technology. A total of about 50 participants mainly industry players attended the talk.

This was followed by a Talk on “Industry Collaboration Programme (ICP)” by TDA. The talk highlighted on how ICP is one of the avenue available for the Government of Malaysia to maximize the value for money on procurement programs. The objective of ICP implementation in Malaysia is to provide a platform for the country to enjoy positive net revenue, generated from investments made through procurement programmes such as fostering strategic international partnership, maximising the usage of local content, establishing a sustainable Malaysian industrial, economy and technological based and encouraging technology and know-how development.
The third day program ended with a talk on “Research and Technology (R&T)” by AMIC. AMIC emphasized their aim to support and foster the aerospace ecosystem in Malaysia through its unique operating mechanism. AMIC’s research activities are led by world class aerospace players namely Airbus Group, Rolls Royce and CTRM. AMIC’s main R&T initiatives are known as Factory of the Future and Sustainable Aviation.

Day 4: 24 March 2017 (Friday)

The fourth day was dedicated engagement with the public by NAICO. An Aerospace Career Talk targeted at secondary school and universities students was organized jointly by NAICO, MARA and CTRM. The objective of the talk was to create awareness among the public particularly students on the potential career opportunities in aerospace industry. A total of 100 participants mainly students attended the talk.

Day 5: 25 March 2017 (Saturday)

NAICO continued its engagement with the public on the final day of LIMA’17. Enquires were received from various level of society particularly industry players, students and parents. Enquiries by industry players were mainly on the possibility of venturing or diversifying into the aerospace industry, as well as, assistance in penetrating into the global aerospace supply chain.  Students and parents enquired on potential courses and careers opportunities available in the aerospace industry in Malaysia.
