1.    The Government today announced that the importation of eight tariff lines of alloy steel products will be subject to licensing requirements from 15 June 2012. The imposition of import licence on these products was gazetted under the Customs (Prohibition of Imports) (Amendment) (No.2) Order 2012 on 12 June 2012.

2.    The tariff lines involved are:

72.25    Flat-rolled products of other alloy steel, of a width of 600mm or more
Of silicon-electrical steel:

(i)        7225.11 000    — Grain-oriented
(ii)        7225.19 000    — Other
(iii)        7225.30 000    - Other, not further worked than hot-rolled, in coils
(iv)        7225.40 000    - Other, not further worked than hot-rolled, not in coils
(v)        7225.50 000    - Other, not further worked than cold-rolled (cold-reduced)
Other:
(vi)        7225.91 000    — Electrolytically plated or coated with zinc
(vii)        7225.92 000    — Otherwise plated or coated with zinc
(viii)        7225.99 000    — Other

3.    The imposition of import licensing requirements on these products will serve two purposes:

i.    Ensure that imported alloy steel products meet establishedquality and safety requirements, and minimise the importation of sub-standards products; and

ii.    Facilitate the monitoring of trade in these products.

4.    The Ministry of International Trade and Industry today met with affected manufacturers/importers and steel associations to brief them on the new licensing requirements and the procedures involved in its implementation.
