The petrochemical and chemical industry is the second largest contributor to our total exports. For the period of January to May 2009, exports of petroleum products amounted to RM997.4 million, while imports reached RM381.6 million. For the chemicals and chemical product sub-sector, imports and exports totaled RM12.7 billion and RM12.3 billion respectively. During the first five months of 2009, total investments in petroleum products (including petrochemicals) totalled RM1.1 billion, while that for chemical and chemical products amounted to RM1.5 billion.
The pharmaceutical industry, which is mostly dominated by SMEs, saw an increasing demand trend in the domestic market. The pharmaceutical industry productivity in 2008 grew by 11.6 per cent, while sales value expanded by 11 per cent to RM1.4 billion in 2008. This increase is due to demand from the domestic market, arising from better health awareness and ageing population.

Nearly two thirds of GDP by 2015 will be services. The new economic model for Malaysia places emphasis on raising the productivity level of workers to help them earn higher incomes as well as raising the country’s income status as a whole from middle to high.
When the new economic model is unveiled, necessary changes and realignment to policies and strategies outlined in the IMP3 will have to be made. These include changes to macro-frameworks and to inject the elements of innovation and creativity into the development strategies.
The target has been set; the contribution of the services sector is to increase to 60 per cent of the GDP by 2015.

MITI is hosting the Industry Excellence Awards (AKI) 2009 this Thursday, 25 March 2010. The event will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre with Y.A.B Prime Minister as the Guest of Honour.
The AKI is the highest recognition given by the Government to companies for their exceptional achievements in organisational excellence, quality improvement and export excellence.
This year, 24 companies will receive the awards in various categories and 33 other companies will receive certificates of excellence. The winner of the Prime Minister’s Industry Excellence Award will be selected from among the winners.
