Davos, 26 Jan – Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry, hosted a Malaysian breakfast dialogue for 20 global corporate, government and media leaders at the sidelines of the World Economic Forum 2012 in Davos. Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar, Managing Director of Khazanah Nasional, also spoke at the breakfast meeting.
In his remarks, Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed emphasised the attractiveness of Malaysia as a premier investment destination for foreign investors, particularly for companies that are of high technology and knowledge driven. He added that the conducive business environment of Malaysia has given birth to many globally competitive companies such as Petronas, Air Asia, Axiata, Maybank, CIMB and Integrated Healthcare Berhad. Mustapa stressed that Malaysia is going through a very exciting transformation which will make the country even more open for business.
In spite of the emergence of regional and global companies from Malaysia, members of the meeting commented that Malaysia should be more aggressive in highlighting Malaysian success stories.
In response to a question on political risks in Malaysia, the Minister assured the audience that Malaysia is politically stable with minimal political risks and has a clear plan for the future.
Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar spoke about the transformation that has been happening in Malaysia, particularly on how Malaysian Government-Linked Companies have become more competitive and professionally managed. He mentioned that the Asian Financial Crisis has made many Malaysian companies stronger and resilient following lessons learnt during that period.
Some of the attendees were Lord Peter Mandelson, former Deputy Prime Minister of the UK; Emirsyah Satar, CEO of Garuda Airlines; Ray Bingham, Chairman of Flextronics; Rolando Balsinder, Director of McKinsey & Company; Juan Pujadas, Vice Chairman of Global Advisory, PricewaterhouseCoopers; and John Riady of Lippo Group.Hollywood starlet, Datuk Michelle Yeoh and partner Dato Sri Jean Todt also attended the event. She is in Davos for a special screening of “The Lady”, a movie where she plays Aung San Suu Kyi. Datuk Michelle is now a board member of Pinewood Studios and she will be assisting Khazanah to promote Pinewood Studios in Iskandar to moviemakers. Datuk Michelle also spoke at the breakfast meeting.
Participants at the breakfast meeting were impressed with the success of Malaysia’s economic transformation under the leadership of the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak.
