India plans to build 18,637km of expressways by 2022 and is seeking collaboration with Malaysia on its road development programmes. Minister of Works, Malaysia, Y.B Dato’ Shaziman Abu Mansor, visited New Delhi and had a meeting with Mr. Kamal Nath, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, India on 14 December 2009. The Ministers agreed to set up a joint panel to enhance cooperation between Malaysia and India in the road sector. Mr. Kamal Nath also sought Malaysian engagement in road development projects, particularly in the areas of road operations, maintenance and tolling. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance bilateral cooperation in road development is targeted for signing during the visit of YAB Dato’ Sri Najib Tun Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia, to India on 19-23 January 2010. Mr. Kamal Nath is scheduled to make a visit to Malaysia in early January 2009. Currently, Malaysian companies are involved in as many as 35 highway projects in India.
