YAB Perdana Menteri today tabled a fiscally responsible, balanced and ‘rakyat-centric’ budget, highlighting the Government’s continuous care for the well-being of all Malaysians as reflected in its theme “Prospering The Nation, Enhancing the Well-Being of the Rakyat: A Promise Fulfilled” (”Memakmur Negara, Mensejahtera Rakyat: Sebuah Janji Ditepati”). Malaysia’s economic fundamentals remain strong. It is estimated that national growth for 2012 will expand between 4.5% and 5%. For 2013, the Malaysian economy is estimated to further expand between 4.5% and 5.5%. The fiscal deficit is expected to be reduced to 4% of GDP in 2013 from 4.5% in 2012. The nominal GDP is expected to exceed RM1 trillion for the first time in 2013. This higher growth will be driven by private investment and consumption. Private sector activity will be supported by an accommodative monetary policy in an environment of low inflation coupled with a robust financial sector.  On the supply...

STATEMENT BY DATO’ SRI MUSTAPA MOHAMAD, MINISTER OF INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND INDUSTRY ON THE SIGNING OF THE PROTOCOL OF ACCESSION OF LAO PDR TO THE WTO
June 19, 2015 , by admin2
With the signing of the Protocol of Accession on 26 October 2012, the WTO General Council has officially agreed to Laos joining the organization, paving the way for the last member of our ASEAN family to become a member of the WTO by early 2013. On behalf of the people of Malaysia, I would like to congratulate Laos for concluding the final step in a long and challenging journey towards WTO membership.  Laos began this process in 1997. Laos has undertaken domestic regulatory reform to conform with the WTO rules. It has also undergone a massive transformation in the way of doing business. It is understood that in the last 15 years, 90 laws and regulations were enacted across the board; tariffs  bound at an average of 18.8% for all products; and market access commitments in 10 service sectors, covering 79 sub-sectors. These achievements are indeed commendable for this land-locked country with 6.5 million people. It is also heartening to note that these efforts were in parallel with...

[MEDIA RELEASE] APEC ADVANCES WORK ON THE FREE TRADE AREA OF THE ASIA-PACIFIC (FTAAP)
June 17, 2015 , by admin2
Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed welcomed China’s initiative to further advance APEC Leaders’ mandates on FTAAP to achieve deeper regional economic integration. Malaysia supported a study to be done as it would be a useful analytical work to evaluate not only the potential benefits, but also the impact, challenges and readiness of economies to meet the high standards envisaged in FTAAP. We are very supportive of the initiative to develop a roadmap for FTAAP and are also supportive of the decision to task officials to finalise this roadmap by the end of this year. This initiative however does not imply that negotiations on FTAAP will be launched immediately after the study is completed. APEC as a non-binding, voluntary forum will play a leadership role and provide intellectual inputs into the FTAAP process, and the FTAAP when agreed, will be pursued outside of APEC. FTAAP will not be inconsistent with Malaysia’s participation in the on-going negotiations on TPP and RCEP. On the...
